This morning we headed out on our boards from Honl’s Beach as we do pretty much every Sunday morning. Celebrity Cruise Lines ‘Century’ was docked in Kailua Bay so we headed towards it as we often do when a cruise ship is anchored there because it is really cool to get up close to them on the boards.
After a while we changed our course and headed south until we were behind Casa de Emdeko before heading back towards Honl’s. On the way back we noticed a large pod of Spinner Dolphins a few thousand feet offshore and started aggressively paddling out towards them. We see Spinner Dolphins just about every time we are out but we were at a point when we saw them that we knew we’d be able to get out among them which is always so cool!
It took no time until we reached the pod of 12-15 dolphins and gently paddled into their midst. They are generally not overly timid and accept us being close to them and they will play and jump in the air all around us.
For a while I had 5-6 of these awesome dudes swimming on each side of my paddle board… just going along beside me as I paddled like I was one of them. Then they would dive and swim back and forth under me and Lynn. They were jumping so close to us that we were getting splashed when they landed. For a bit we just sat down on our boards with our feet in the water as they played and jumped all around us. It was incredibly cool and really made our morning.
We watched as the began to move away and then stood again and paddled back towards the beach. The water today was aqua blue and so clear with some decent rollers but the surf at shore was not too gnarly so we were both able to ride in waves on our feet when we got back to the beach. All in all a really cool day on the water.
After cleaning up the boards, the car and showering we went over to Annie’s Burgers and Beer in Kealakekua. This has also become somewhat of a Sunday tradition and really helps make our day. We split a big basket of garlic and basil fries and he got the special chili burger and I got their poke burger with a Torpedo extra IPA brewski. Yum!
