Okay, I’m loath to reveal my ignorance, but I have to ask… what the heck is that device on the wall, just below the ceiling, just above the framed picture?

    • Kona Blake says:

That is not an ignorant question my man! What you are seeing is a refrigerated AC unit. You see these most commonly in the tropics. Like any built in refrigerated air cooling system there are condensers outside and these units allow us to only cool areas of the house that we are using as opposed to a conventional system that cools the entire house whether you are using all rooms or not. Electric is expensive here and this saves money and energy. This is our first home here with air conditioning at all and we never use it. It will be nice to have come September and October when nights are hot and our trade winds stop blowing.

Okay, that makes sense… it looks a bit like the baseboard heaters I’ve seen, but it wouldn’t make sense to have one of those in Hawaii, or positioned that high. I imagine it’s up there so the cool air will fall?

    • Kona Blake says:

Yeah we have no heating system at all ;) . I assume there is some logic to where they install them but I never really thought too much about it. I assume they are out of the way up there and can adequately distribute cool air. I know our have oscillators and stuff inside but like I said we’ve not used them yet.
