The last gay pride event we attended was on the mainland before we moved to Hawaii several years ago. Since then we have looked for a Big Island Pride Festival but only found Pride Festivals on Oahu, Maui and Kauai. It’s bummed me out for a few years as we have always referred to our yearly pride event as “Gay Christmas.” So for several years now all the good little queer boys and girls (and other) of the Big Island have had no Gay Christmas. Can you imagine anything sadder than queer boys and girls (and other) having to go through summer after summer with no big drag queen santa visiting???
So for a few years now I have been talking about doing something about this and for a few years now I have wised up and overlooked all of the sad little queer boys and girls (and other) in favor of keeping a low profile and taking a easier, more comfortable path. We have simply tuned into Honolulu or San Francisco Pride Festivals on the internet as a kind of “Virtual Gay Christmas”.
This year however, against better judgement and Lynn continually telling me I was nuts, I jumped in with both feet to see if I could rally the good little queer boys and girls (and other) and help organize a Big Island LGBT Pride Festival for 2012. And I am happy to report that this thing is really coming together!
A friend recently put this flyer together (below) for the event and we are distributing them and getting businesses around the island to post them in store windows. I’d love it if you would help us spread these around and if you know a local business that would put these in windows or make them available for handout I’d really appreciate it.
Also I’d absolutely love to see you at this years event. If you are a good little queer boy or girl (or other), or know and love someone that is, or you are at heart, please make every effort to attend the main event on Sunday the 22nd. If you are coming from outside of Kona, the Courtyard King Kamehameha Kona Beach Hotel (the host hotel) is offering discounts for Big Island Pride. We have a beautiful setting with exhibitors, beach, cocktails, and more! Aloha and Mahalo.
