Recently I was asked, after the person I was talking with discovered I have lived in many places, where the best place I ever lived was. The question took me aback a bit because, well duh, I live in freaking Hawaii! So the answer should be painfully obvious right? But it surprised me when I paused before answering. I had to think about the question for a minute.
I responded that I suppose there are good and bad things about all places, well uh… most places anyway. Obviously life on the Hawaiian Islands provides an unparalleled lifestyle that would be hard to match anywhere else on the planet, if it could be matched at all. I went on to explain everything we loved about life in Kona… Abundant sunshine, beaches, clear clean water, water access for SUP, boogie boards, snorkeling, swimming and more. I like the landscape, the climate, the towns, the people.
So geographically on the planet we are home and we love it. But I continued, I am a city boy and I miss being in the city. So the best place we lived in terms of homes was the high-rise condo we owned in downtown Salt Lake City. I loved life in a luxury high-rise building. And I loved living in the central city. The restaurants, the shops, the people, the arts and entertainment were all at our doorstep and were all fabulous.
So she asked if I thought I’d move back to a city and high-rise again. I told her we just bought a house here and that I was building a business here. So no, I didn’t see us doing anything in the near future. But yeah, I could see myself in a Waikiki high-rise condo someday, or maybe even a coastal city in California. But for now we’re living and loving our life in Kona. It’s home and we love it. Aloha.

I lived right outside of Waikiki across from the Ala Wai Canal for $500 a month in a one bedroom apartment with a view of Waikiki and a short walk into Waikiki. I wish I could have purchased the place… unfortunately after nearly 8 years in the place… it got sold to someone else who doubled the “Rent” a few times and eventually put it out of my price range so I moved back to the Big Island because I had opportunities here and a house inherited.
If I ever could move back to Oahu… it would be w/in walking range… but not directly in Waikiki.
So you can relate to where I am coming from and how nice it can be to be in the heart of things. I think I would live directly in Waikiki but the circumstances would have to be just right. I enjoy being able to walk to places so I would want work to be close by and/or a home office situation.
