One of the best trips Anne and I have ever taken was to SF, and we did most of the things you’re describing here. Yeah, we’re tourists, and we’re not ashamed of it! And I LOVE the Buena Vista… the atmosphere, the view of the bay, the cable cars outside, the bartender with the mustache, and especially those delicious Irish coffees…

Seeing that from the ocean, especially at night, has to be spectacular. It is a real perk of that particular cruise that most get to see. We were hoping to see some lava flows on our cruise — when we booked, we were told the ship would pass by an eruption that was dropping into the sea, and it would be a night passage so it would be easily visible, and we even had a cabin on the landward-facing side of the ship. But naturally the eruption stopped a couple weeks before we got there. Sigh.

If I recall correctly, I had some sort of ying-yang sashimi, with a creme brule in a pineapple ring for dessert. Of course, my dining companion was the star of the show! The sunset paled in comparison (especially because it was after dark).

We’ve had nothing but amazing experiences, even at the Kaanapali Maui location which had only been open for a few days. This Roy’s, BTW, is also my least favorite in terms of ambiance. It’s basically a golf club and overlooks the Kaanapali course, which is pretty enough, but golf is not our thing.
